Awardees
2023 Recipient
Kaitlin Labatt
Kaitlin Labatt is a 2023 Bachelor of Architecture Graduate from The City College of New York. Influenced from a young age by the experience of living aboard a sailboat, Kaitlin became fascinated by the power of spatial and environmental relationships. Interrogating these concepts became the foundation of her architectural and personal pursuits, leading to positions as a Landscape Designer, President of the CCNY Green Club, and ORCA Research Fellow studying urban agricultural systems. Now entering the professional field she is looking forward to developing and implementing sustainable strategies across the field of architecture and within the public realm.
2021-2022 Recipient
Jack Li
Jack Li is a fourth year undergraduate student in the Bachelor of Architecture program at the City College of New York. With the power to curate each person’s experience in the world, Jack knew immediately that he wanted to pursue architecture. The first in his family to pursue higher education, Jack was exposed to architecture during the ACE Mentorship Program at Perkins Eastman. He fell in love with the act of drawing and reiteration, especially in making conceptually beautiful but structurally difficult designs feasible. He sees architecture as extension of one’s character, creating spaces that can contribute to and enhance society. After bringing back thesis to the undergraduate program as part of the Student Advisory Board, he is looking forward to exploring the essence of drawing and emotion in architecture.
2020 Recipient
Katherine Tenman
Katherine Tenman is the inaugural 2020 recipient of the Memorial Robert E. Markinson Architecture Award. She is a fourth year student in the Bachelor’s of Architecture program at the City College of New York. She was born and raised in New York so it came to no surprise when she showed interest in Architecture. She hopes to one day be able to create sustainable and environmentally friendly designs, as well as work internationally. She enjoys building technology because it’s interesting to find desired solutions within a very restrictive constraint. For example, the disposal of plastics is a highly visible global problem that seems inescapable. She is looking forward to working on an independent study in Spring 2021 that will be focused on how to use recycled plastic in building construction to create a possible solution.
